If you can inspect a mattress in your own room before paying, here is exactly what to look at.
Buying a mattress you have not seen is a gamble unless the seller lets you inspect it first. Our model is inspect-before-payment: we deliver and set the mattress up, and you pay once you are satisfied. Here is a checklist you can use on delivery day, whatever store you buy from.
Before the delivery team arrives
- Measure the path from the front door to the bedroom, including stairs, turns and elevators
- Clear that path and the bedroom so the team can set up quickly
- Remove the old mattress, or confirm whether the team will do it
- Check that your frame or base is ready and the right size
Check the labels and size
Find the manufacturer tag and confirm the brand, model name and size match what you ordered. Measure the mattress and compare it with the listed dimensions. A Queen should measure about 60 by 80 inches, a King about 76 by 80, and a California King about 72 by 84.
Inspect the surface
Look over the top and sides in good light. Check for stains, odors, tears, loose threads and indentations. Run your hand along the surface to feel for lumps or soft spots. Check the corners and edges, where wear shows first.
Lie on it
Do not rely on a quick sit. Lie in your normal sleeping position for at least ten minutes, then try other positions. If you share the bed, have your partner lie down too and test how you feel when they roll over.
Check how it sits on your base
Place the mattress on your frame or foundation and make sure it fits without hanging over or leaving gaps. On an adjustable base, raise and lower it to confirm the mattress flexes properly.
Confirm the warranty and paperwork
- Ask for the warranty terms in writing, including what is covered and for how long
- Keep the receipt, delivery confirmation and any care instructions
- Note the model and serial information from the tag for your records
If something is wrong
Say so before you pay. Describe the problem, take photos, and ask what the seller will do: a replacement, a different model, or a cancellation. A good seller expects this and has a clear process. If the answer is vague, that tells you something.
What happens next
If the mattress passes your inspection, you pay and keep it. Give it a few weeks to settle, since a new bed can feel different at first, and use a protector to keep the warranty and the mattress in good shape.
Frequently asked questions
What should I check first on a new mattress?
Confirm the label matches your order, measure the size, and inspect the surface and edges for stains, tears and indentations before you lie on it.
How long should I lie on a mattress to test it?
At least ten minutes in your normal sleeping position. Short tests can hide pressure points and alignment issues.
What if I do not like the mattress at delivery?
Tell the seller before you pay. With an inspect-before-payment model, you are not committed until you are satisfied.
Do I need a mattress protector?
It is a good idea. A protector guards against spills and moisture, and many manufacturers require clean, stain-free condition for warranty claims.
