Who should choose a California King?
People over about 6 feet 2 inches often find an 80 inch mattress short, and an extra 4 inches of length is noticeable. Cal Kings also suit long, narrow bedrooms, where a standard King would crowd the walls on either side.
If you are average height and want the most width, a standard King is the better choice, since it is 4 inches wider.
Bedding and frames
California King sheets, frames and toppers are a separate size from King, so check labels before you buy. Selection is slightly narrower than for Queen and King, but all major bedding brands carry it.
Cal King mattresses pair well with adjustable bases, and most luxury hybrids and foam models are offered in the size.
Frequently asked questions
What are the dimensions of a California King?
A California King is 72 inches wide by 84 inches long, about 6 feet by 7 feet.
Is a California King bigger than a King?
They offer almost the same sleeping surface (about 6,050 square inches versus 6,080) in a different shape. A King is 4 inches wider; a California King is 4 inches longer.
Can I use King sheets on a California King?
No. The dimensions differ, so King sheets will not fit properly. Buy sheets labeled California King.
How tall do you have to be for a California King?
There is no strict rule, but people over about 6 feet 2 inches usually benefit from the extra length. Shorter sleepers often prefer the width of a standard King.
