Mattress sellers use these words loosely. Here is what each one usually means and what to ask.
Mattress stores use a handful of words for discounted inventory, and they do not always mean the same thing. Knowing the usual meanings helps you compare offers and spot problems.
Closeout
A closeout is inventory a seller is clearing out, often because a model is being discontinued or replaced. Closeout mattresses can be new, unused stock or showroom pieces. The key questions are whether it is new or displayed, and what warranty covers it.
Clearance
Clearance usually refers to a retailer reducing prices to move existing stock, often at the end of a season or when a collection changes. It is a pricing event rather than a condition, so the mattress itself can be brand new.
Outlet
An outlet is a store or channel that sells overstock, returns or lower-priority stock, sometimes at big discounts. The range of condition is wide, from new to returned or cosmetically imperfect, so ask specifically.
Overstock and open box
Overstock is simply more inventory than a seller can sell at full price. Open-box means the packaging has been opened, which may mean the mattress was returned or displayed.
Floor model
A floor model is a showroom display piece. It has been tried by customers but not slept on nightly like a home mattress. See our guide on floor-model mattresses for what to inspect.
How to tell a good deal
- The brand and model are clearly stated, with the retail price shown for comparison
- The condition is described specifically, not just "like new"
- You can inspect it before paying
- The warranty is explained in writing
- Delivery terms are clear
Red flags
- A seller who will not say whether the mattress is new, displayed or returned
- No way to inspect before payment
- Missing manufacturer tags
- A price that seems far too low for a luxury brand
How we sell
We sell showroom and closeout inventory from luxury brands. Every listing shows the brand, model, size and price, mattresses are inspected before delivery, delivery is free, and you inspect it before you pay.
Frequently asked questions
Are closeout mattresses new?
Some are new and unused, and some are showroom pieces. A good seller states the condition clearly for each listing.
Is clearance the same as closeout?
Not exactly. Clearance is a price reduction to move stock; closeout often means clearing a model that is being discontinued. The mattress could be new in either case.
Should I buy an outlet mattress?
It can be a good value if you know the brand, can inspect the mattress, and get clear warranty terms. Avoid sellers who will not state the condition.
